ECHOES IN TRANSLATION
»KRZ’s dream-like journey needed a tone that was both poetic and simple. I focused on capturing the quiet, reflective dialogue while making sure the atmosphere felt both magical and real in Turkish.
One moment in particular left me fighting back tears
— a conversation with the last telephone operator in the Zero. Poppy, who oversees the transition of labor there from humans to machines - that is, she is "training her own replacement."
This hit me deeply, as I couldn’t help but think about how, as a translator in the age of AI and machine translation, I might one day share the same fate as that operator. It was a deeply heartbreaking and personal moment.
Another highlight was localizing Junebug's song,
▶︎"Too Late to Love You." The song's melancholic lyrics resonated with me, and adapting them to convey the same emotions in Turkish was a welcome challenge. I spent days listening to the song on my daily walks through the woods. I felt like a poet.
I surrounded myself with the soundtracks of KRZ. My nights were filled with flow thanks to
▶︎“The Clearing“ playing on an endless loop. While translating the characters' conversations, what’s left unsaid often felt as important as what’s spoken.
Kentucky Route Zero in Turkish, is a perfect echo of the original, a reflection in the Echo River that flows eternally in the player’s mind. I feel like I painstakingly paid my debt to my readers and players who will spend time with this special game. I will be always proud of this colossal work. «
